The Beginning...
The area was cleared and the site was prepared for the project...
Local business, Landscape Solutions, LLC and members of the Asbury Volunteer Fire Department planted three Red Maple trees and ran water lines to the garden area on Monday, March 12, 2007. We are so grateful for their contributions to this project. The three Red Maple trees weighed about 500 pounds each!
On March 20, biology students and 5th grade students ventured to the site to see that potted plants and a pile of mulch were waiting to be tended to. They picked up trash on the way to the Outdoor Classroom and around it to demonstrate their knowledge of good environmental stewardship. In the picture above right, a student discovers a shelf fungi on a rotting log at the edge of the garden area.
The butterfly gardens will eventually have an arbor over the walkway area and Dogwood trees will be planted to flank the entrance to the nature trail which can be seen in the background.
Scout Troop 188 has worked on this nature trail for several years, completing various projects. Here is the totem pole which lists their Eagle Scouts and the sign they made for the head of the trail area. We are proud to join them in working toward the common goal of providing our school with an outdoor study area.
